Organic Solutions For Pest Control

!±8± Organic Solutions For Pest Control

Many people shy away from organic gardening because they believe that their plants will become infested by insects if they do not spray them with the correct "poisons." The truth is, there are plenty of natural ways to keep bugs off of your plants - that is, there are lots of ways to keep the bad bugs off while attracting the good ones.

· Garlic. We all know that garlic keeps away vampires, but did you know that it also keeps annoying insects like aphids out of your garden? You can create your own insect spray by crushing the cloves. Also, plant a sprouting garlic in the garden to act as an additional repellent.

· Allium Family. Other "stinky" plants besides garlic, like onions, chives, and scallions also repel pests. Plant these throughout your garden.

· Fennel. Attract those beautiful ladybugs by planting this wonderful herb. Remember, ladybugs will kill spider mites and aphids, but they will not hurt plants, people, or pets. Compared to chemical pesticides, ladybugs are much less expensive, and they are self-renewing!

· Other herbs. Dill, cilantro, angelica, and parsley attract ladybugs to your gardens, too. They also attract other beneficial insects.

· Praying Mantis. A praying mantis can be the answer to your prayers... or they can become a bit of a pest, themselves. This insect is a very hungry one, all to happy to eat aphids, fruit flies, grasshoppers, moths, crickets, and house flies... but that is not all that they eat. They also tend to eat those beneficial insects like lacewings and hover flies. It is possible to buy cases of praying mantis eggs, if you want to include this hungry insect in your garden.

· Organic sprays. If adding insects to your garden is not your idea of the best way to get rid of insects, there are some organic sprays that you can use (like neem or pyrethrum). You can also set out sticky traps.

· Maintain proper soil fertility. Start with the soil - use proper waste handling methods as well as good compost methods. Plant a diverse ecosystem (of native species). By maintaining proper soil fertility, you will repel pests, weeds, and fungus.

The type of pest control that you decide to use depends greatly on the type of pest that you have - flies, grasshoppers, fungus gnats, leafminers, leafhoppers, crickets, caterpillars, aphids, bean beetles, etc. The list of insect pest seems to go and on. Luckily, there are some beneficial insects to combat them!

Overall, it is a good idea to invite green lacewings, ladybugs, and praying mantis to your garden. Find ways to attract them, or go out and buy them and bring them by force to your garden!

Besides using insects as pest control, there are plenty of traps and organic pesticides that you can use. Why not try these out first, before you try out pesticides that can be harmful to the environment?

The How To Guide To Organic Indoor Gardening

!±8± The How To Guide To Organic Indoor Gardening

Since I can remember, I have always loved to get my hands dirty in the garden. I can still remember growing my first pea plant and anxiously watching everyday for that little sprout to get going. It always fascinated me how such a delicate sprout could, with the proper care, become a strong, vibrant plant that will produce delicious fruits.

The garden has always been of great Importance to me. It can be a point of pride or - if its in poor repair - a source of embarrassment. For these reasons, and because a garden is such an Important investment, it only makes sense to provide all the tender loving care that you can give.

Sometimes this is easier said than done, because gardening is so complex, right?

Wrong!

Anyone who has the desire to grow plants can do it. Whether it be fruits and veggies for eating or beautiful flowers to decorate your home. Growing a garden is a simple thing when you educate yourself first. You should do research on any species of plant that you want to grow so that you will be ready and able to address any issues that may come at you along the way. I'm going to touch on the basics of growing your own garden. It will be entirely up to you to do the research on any other particular species other than what is mentioned in this article.

Lighting

Being a gardener, the winters have always been the toughest times for me. I'm not sure if its cabin fever or just a need to make things grow. In some parts of the United States, it isn't an issue, but, in Kentucky, the winters can be very harsh, making it impossible to grow outdoors.

With the evolution of CFL technology ( compact fluorescent lamp ), it has become very affordable to move my garden indoors. The CFL's remind me of aquarium lighting and uses about as much energy. I use New Wave T5 High Output Fluorescent Lights in my garden with grand results.

These new high output fluorescent lamps have an extremely high lumen per watt rating compared to standard fluorescent bulbs, making them extremely suitable for indoor cultivation purposes.

High-output florescent lamps have a very low heat factor which allows the fixture to be mounted extremely close to the plant canopy, thus increasing usable light levels. The New Wave T5 features a wide throw reflector lined with Imported german 95% reflective aluminum to drive every available lumen of light to your plants. Light output is 300% higher in this high-tech reflector compared to cheap fluorescent fixtures.

I keep my lights very close to the tops of the plants and my young sprouts are in no danger of being burned or dried out by the heat. And it gives you peace of mind knowing that there isn't as much of a chance for fire like there is with heavier, hotter, high output metal halide lamps.

When your vegetative area starts getting a little larger, or when you are growing plants larger than 24 inches tall, you may find it time to purchase a metal halide for your indoor garden.

Metal Halide plant lamp systems produce a strong output of the blue spectrum, which will promote strong vegetative growth. This blue spectrum is most needed by plants for rapid growth. It's the best type of light to be used as a primary light source (if little or no natural sunlight is available). If you are growing leafy plants such as lettuce or herbs then a Metal Halide bulb is sufficient. Metal halide plant growth lamp systems can be used as the primary light source to grow plants from start to finish.

The T5 replacement lamps sell for about each (TL5 HO/54W/865) or for four, while the HID bulb can go for about for MH (MS 1000 hor) or 0 (LU100S/HTL/EN hortlux) or 0 (LU1000 standard). The amount of light you can put on the plants will depend to a much greater extent on the distance that the leaves are from the plant than the fixture. The kind of light you want depends on the kind of plants you have.

The Metal Halide will give you more foliage, the High Pressure Sodium will induce bloom but draw the plants out longer. Depending on the natural heat and light conditions where you are growing, the heat output from the HID lights can help keep the growing space warmer. This can be a consideration especially when you are spending good money on heat. Depending on how far North you are, it can be very difficult to get plants to bloom in a greenhouse in the dead of winter. You can, however, mature fruit which has already set.

So, the answer is that every decision is a trade off. Make up your own mind.

HID Lighting Helpful Tips

Hanging height: Due to the heat that is emitted from these types of fixtures, you should hang them according to size. Smaller wattage systems (100 and 250) should be hung about 2 to 3 feet from the top of the plants. Medium wattage systems (400 and 600) should be hung around 4 feet from the top of the plants. High wattage systems (1000 and up) should be placed at least 4 to 6 feet from the plant tops.

How long should lights run? This depends on the type of plant. Most plants and vegetables need about 10 to 12 hours of light to promote growth. Plants that produce fruits or flowers will show improvement with up to 16 hours a day of supplemental light.

Light Emmiting Diode (L.E.D.) - I'm interested to see if these lights will be the lights of the future. The basic idea is that a growing plant uses only a narrow band of the lighting spectrum for chlorophyll production. Up to now the only choice has been CFL, Sodium or Halide lights which both produce a very wide band of lighting and less than 10% of a Sodium or Halide lamps output is actually used by the plant.

With the advent of LED lighting, they can custom tailor the output of the lamp to match exactly the band of light required for Chlorophyll production! This means that almost 100% of the power input for LED GROW LIGHTs is used for plant production.

Another great benefit of the LED GROW LIGHT is the very small amount of heat produced. The l.e.d. grow lights operate completely cool to the touch and plants can actually grow right up to the fixture, try that with any Sodium or Metal Halide lamp.

1) No fans required for cooling

2) No heat damage to plants

3) No high temperature lights to worry about

Also, the LED GROW LIGHT does not require a ballast and simply plugs into any standard household outlet. These lights have a rated life of over 100,000 hours! (there are 8,760 hours in a year).

BLUE LIGHT is important for the formation of chlorophyll, chloroplast development (chloroplast are the little organs inside cells where photosynthesis takes place, more of them = more photosynthesis = more plant growth), also, photosynthesis circadian rhythm (knowing when lights are on and off - related to flowering too) and the production of some enzymes in plants is controlled by blue light. In land plants, a decrease in blue light also might signal to a leaf that it is a shade leaf... meaning it thinks it is not in good light, so it won't make chloroplasts, which means no matter how many photons of light hit that leaf it will not produce the maximum amount of energy that it could.

RED LIGHT stimulates phytochrome responses such as stem elongation, flowering, and other plant morphology changes.

HPS lights have more yellow/red which is why they lead to elongated stems, and great flowering. Red light can increase starch accumulation in some plants (that is like animals gaining fat, extra energy).

It Can be used by itself to grow plants or to supplement HPS (High Pressure Sodium), MH (Metal Halide) or Fluorescent Grow Lights.

Light Emitting Diode (L.E.D.) technology is the absolute newest technology in plant growth. These lights represent the cutting edge of horticultural lighting. LED lights are currently being used by NASA for growing plants in outer space!

Planning and Strategy

Planning and strategy are obviously important for a healthy garden. Make sure to have sufficient lighting, proper soil with good drainage, good nutrients, fresh air, room to grow, and a quality water supply. This will ensure a healthy garden that will pay you back for all your hard work and patience. You should plan for plenty of grow room. Before long, your garden will be lush, and may become difficult to care for if there isn't enough space for you to water.

Make a list, depending on how big you want your garden and what you want to grow. Be sure to ask questions at your local garden center. The people who work at garden centers generally are very knowledgeable about all aspects of growing.

So, make a list, Check it twice, And lets get growing!

The Organic gardener

Organic grow mediums - I always start my seeds in Bio-dome. Bio-dome make germination a breeze with a climate controlled environment. Everything you need to get your seeds going can be bought in a inexpensive kit at your local garden center or you can pick one up at wal-mart for around four bucks.

Tip: Get a spray bottle and mist your seedlings often. As your plants grow, they will benefit from an occasional misting.

Once your seeds have sprouted, you can move them from the bio-dome and plant them into individual containers.

*This is very important:

Be sure to place in containers that drain well. If your soil or containers do not drain well, it will be difficult for their roots to grow big and strong which in turn will deprive your plant of important nutrients and oxygen, resulting in lanky plants with small fruits and, given enough time, will cause disease and unwanted pest.

I always fill my containers with Foxfarm soil. The ultimate potting soil - everything your plants need, in one bag. With their powerhouse blend of earthworm castings, bat guano, and sea going fish and crab meal. Composted forest humus, sandy loam, and sphagnum peat moss give Foxfarm its light, aerated texture. Start with Foxfarm and watch your plants come to life!

I like to add a little perlite to my mix for even better drainage.

Watering properly - This is one of the most common problems with gardeners. I know that it was frustrating for me until i learned the trick to keeping my plants watered well without overdoing it. If you only take one thing from this article with you to your garden...take this tip!

Stick your finger in the soil, about two knuckles deep.

Check for moisture.

If its moist, you will feel it.

Give it another day.

If its too dry, it will be difficult to break the soil very deep.

Do not have a watering schedule without knowing if your plants need watering or not. Water just enough for your plant to consume within 30 minutes or so. This will help prevent root rot and allow your roots to absorb oxygen. The end result will be a huge root mass that will supply your plants with all the nutrients they need to produce the goodies that we all love so much.

*Tip: The quality of water is of great importance. If you only have a tap water source, be sure to set your water out in containers for at least 24 hrs. before watering. This will give the chlorine and other harmful elements time to dissipate. Using chlorinated tap water will destroy vital microbes that help feed your plants.

Nutrients - You cant just rely on good soil for your nutrients. The truth is that most of your nutrients that come in your soil will be used up within a few weeks. You will need to supplement your soil depending on your plant variety. If you do a simple word search for homemade fertilizers, you will find many home remedies for making your own organic compost. I'm not going to touch on that because its not the route that I take to organicville.

You can start a compost pile somewhere in your backyard but it brings in to many pest for my garden so I buy my nutrients all ready broke down and packaged for easy storage. For a small price I get all I need bottled up and ready for easy application. I use, but not limited to Foxfarm hydroponic plant food. Now i'm an old dirt warrior but I love the easiness of the bottled nutrients. Just because it says hydroponic plant food doesnt mean we can use it on our soil. It works so well for me that i'm sure that I will never try anything else. All the directions are on the bottles and easy to follow.

Get your garden going with Grow Big, Foxfarm's fast-acting, water-soluble fertilizer for lush, vegetative, compact growth. Use Grow Big early in the season when young plants need an extra boost. They add earthworm castings and Norwegian kelp into this special brew to encourage sturdier, healthier stems and leaves, but they also provide enough nutrients and trace minerals to create the kind of healthy branching that you'll need later in the season for more abundant buds and blooms.

Garden Tip: Allow new plantings a few days to settle in, then begin using at the rate of two teaspoons per gallon of water every other time you water. You can also use Grow Big as a foliar feeding, applying to both sides of leaves, preferably early in the morning. At the first sign of flowering, switch to Tiger Bloom Liquid Plant Food.

Ready to bloom? Tiger Bloom makes it happen. This is an ultra-potent, fast-acting, high-phosphorus fertilizer with just enough nitrogen to sustain healthy, vigorous green growth during flowering. The low pH keeps it stable and ensures that the micronutrient's will be available when plants need them. In addition to containing critical trace minerals,Foxfarm brews their liquid fertilizer with earthworm castings and kelp meal for a biologically active formula.

Garden tip: Use Tiger Bloom at the first sign of flowering at the rate of 2-3 teaspoons per gallon of water. It can also be used as a foliar fertilizer; just apply it to both sides of leaves early in the morning. To extend flowering or fruiting, add their Big Bloom liquid fertilizer late in the season.

I also use an all purpose deodorized fish emulsion. This will give you a measured dose of nitrogen to get you through for a few weeks.

Alaska Fish Fertilizer contains over 19 trace elements and 11 different vitamins, including vitamins B-1 and B-12. Deodorized for use on all indoor and outdoor plants. Often combined with Maxicrop to enhance performance. It will not burn the plants.

Root Development

This is probably the most important part of your plants development. Without a large, healthy root system, your plant will be starved of vital nutrients and will produce a small harvest that will hardly be worth your time. The bigger and healthier the root, the bigger and healthier the plant. These two things go hand in hand.

So, I like to focus from seedling, on taking care of the root system and giving it delicate nutrients to boost its growth. This will ensure that my garden will produce large tomatoes and other vegetables. I use Maxicrop liquid seaweed for extra minerals and to bulk up my roots.

Maxicrop Liquid Seaweed (Kelp Extract)

Derived from fresh Norwegian kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum), Maxicrop Kelp contains over 70 minerals, micronutrients, amino acids and vitamins. Also contains growth regulators which stimulate vigorous root development and plant growth. Encourages tolerance to plant stresses such as frost, pests, disease and drought.

Last, but not least I use Earth Juice, a catalyst I give my plants and it increases how much the plants can take in. If you can get more of your nutrients in, your plants are sure to be full.

Earth Juice Catalyst

The crucial link, is a versatile and vital product for the home, farm and anyone who wants to optimize their plants and trees nutrient uptake for increased growth and yields. Catalyst provides whats missing - enzymes, hormones, vitamins, amino acids, nutrients, and surfactants that aid in stimulating overall plant growth and production. Best when used in conjunction with organic or synthetic liquid and dry fertilizers.

Do not use with synthetic time-released fertilizers. A great organic alternative to synthetic B-1 formulas and growth boosters. Use as an organic cloning solution for soft-stem cuttings.

Air circulation and Exhaust

Air circulation - Its very important to provide your garden with fresh air. An oscillating fan will usually be enough to provide fresh air and to provide some sort of exhaust as long as your garden is in the open. If you grow your garden in a closet or a similar small space, be sure to leave the door open as much as possible. This will ensure proper ventilation and your garden will do well.

Good air circulation is essential for a good, strong garden. The motion of the air will cause your plants to have fat stalks and be able to support larger fruit. I wont spend too much more time on this subject. Just go buy a fan and provide some fresh air for your garden. It will love you for it!

Try to buy a fan that oscillates, It will give you more option than a stationary. Making sure to hit every part of your garden.

Your light will depend on how much exhaust your garden will require. The heat from some lamps need to be directed out of the garden area immediately. I have included some Pictures to give you a better idea about exhaust fans. These exhaust systems are not necessary with CFL's or LED's.

Temperature and Humidity Control

Temperature & Humidity Control - Keeping an eye out for your temperature and humidity can help prevent unwanted pest, mold, mildew, and over - heating. Most plants grow well between 70 and 80 degrees and, I like to keep my humidity around 50%, but, it will depend on your choice of plant life.

I use this EcoPlus thermometer / hygrometer. They are really inexpensive and will save you a lot of headache later. They are usually around .00.

o Perfect for constant temperature monitoring of a garden.

o Measures indoor/outdoor temperature & indoor humidity.

o Stores the Min./Max. values of the indoor/outdoor temperature and indoor humidity.

o Switch between °C and °F.

o Clock function with alarm

o 12/24 hour mode switch

o Water proof temperature probe

Really hot conditions can result in dry soil and your plants wilting away.

Pest Control

Pest Control - There are some really good organic pest killers and prevention products on the market but, I have found that a combination of cleanliness and preventive maintenance are the best avenues for a pest free garden.

Be sure to clean your grow area before planting the first seed. A couple of teaspoons of bleach in a gallon of water should do the trick. Spray your grow area down well and wipe dry.Pay special attention to the corners, making sure to get every bit of dust and dirt.

I like to follow up with Safer Brand insect killing soap that is all organic. This stuff keeps all the little guys away! It is best used as a preventative measure to ward off insects that might want to eat your lovely plant friends. It contains seaweed extract to keep plants healthy and combat stress.

An OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) organic product, which means you're not spraying your leafy friends with toxins, unfriendly to either you or your plant. Made from plant oils, the soap gets rid of unwanted insects by disrupting their waxy outer skin (beneficial insects such as ladybugs and praying mantis are hard-bodied and not affected by the soap).

Keeping Safer's on hand will ensure that your garden is a pest free environment, enabling your plants to grow to their fullest capacity. Here are a few examples of the pest that can ravage your garden.

Fungus, Molds, and Mildew Control

Fungus, Molds, and Mildew - This is another instance where I believe that Safer Brand is the best choice for my garden. I use their Garden Fungicide for my entire grow area. I would suggest spraying your grow area down with Safer before planting. This will kill any lingering mold or mildew that can harm your plants.

I believe that with the proper care and preventive maintenance, you can stop these problems from ever occurring. Just remember.....Keep your work area clean and find a good organic product to keep on hand and your end result will be a grow area that you can be proud of and it will produce a bounty for you repeatedly.

Sing to your plants!

I know it sounds crazy but they love it! You could whistle or just make a point to breath on your plants everyday. You could buy an expensive Co2 emitter but, for a small indoor garden, your breath will be plenty of Co2 to make a difference.

Here is a report about the importance of Co2 that I found on the internet:

The Importance of Carbon Dioxide (Co2) for Healthy Plant Growth

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) contributes to plant growth as part of the miracle of nature known as photosynthesis. This enables plants to combine Carbon Dioxide and water with the aid of light energy to form sugar. Some of these sugars are converted into complex compounds that increase dry solid plant substances for continued growth to final maturity. However, when the supply of carbon dioxide is cut off, or reduced, the complex plant cell structure cannot utilize the suns energy fully and growth or development is curtailed.

Although carbon dioxide is one of three main components which combine to produce the products necessary for plant growth, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is only 0.03% (250 to 330 parts per million). This compares to 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 0.97% trace gases in normal air. Numerous tests have proven that during the winter months carbon dioxide concentrations inside greenhouses is invariably much lower than in outside air. This same phenomenon has been shown in controlled environment gardens.

CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) - IMPROVES PLANT GROWTH AND QUALITY

Research has shown that in most cases rate of plant growth under otherwise identical growing conditions is directly related to carbon dioxide concentration.

The amount of carbon dioxide a plant requires to grow may vary from plant to plant, but tests show that most plants will stop growing when the CO2 level decreases below 150 ppm. Even at 220 ppm, a slow-down in plant growth is significantly noticeable.

Colorado State University conducted tests with carnations and other flowers in controlled CO2 atmospheres ranging from 200 to 550 ppm. The higher CO2 concentrations significantly increased the rate of formation of dry plant matter, total flower yield and market value.

So basically, Co2, will help in making your fruits and flowers bigger and better. It will make all the difference to talk, sing, breath or whistle to your plants

And, you could supplement your singing with a Co2 boost kit. You can pick one up from .00 - 0.00 from many different suppliers over the internet. This would make all the difference in the world! Highly Recommended for Larger Gardens!!!

So, Enjoy your new garden, and make sure to have fun with it. With the proper care and a little patience, your garden will pay you back repeatedly.

Top Ten Good News Stories of 2006

!±8± Top Ten Good News Stories of 2006

Despite wars and violence in the Middle Ease, when you add up all the good news headlines in 2006 the world emerges looking a lot brighter. Steady progress to reverse global warming, species decline, oil dependence and disease in 2006 alongside trends toward peace and sustainability make it a year worthy of congratulations. Presenting the 8th Annual Top Ten Good News Stories of the Year...

1) Bold Steps in 2006 Reduce Global Warming

o A Giant step was taken to win the hearts and minds of world citizens in the cause of reducing global warming when Al Gore premiered the film, An Inconvenient Truth. With it's theatrical release came an expansion of our understanding of climate change.

o Stars like Brad Pitt cast a spotlight on Green building practices that help reduce warming. He helped create a Sustainable Design Competition for New Orleans this year and when the winner was announced, a 'green' housing plan was unveiled for the city's Lower Ninth Ward incorporating the newest sustainable technologies to cut pollution, as well as energy costs by 50 to 60 percent.

o British billionaire, Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Conglomerate (and Virgin records and airline) announced in September he will personally invest billion in alternative energy initiatives. He committed all personal profits from his airlines and rail company for the next ten years toward developing energy sources that do not contribute to global warming.

o As of October, 2006, 320 mayors of US cities had boldly gone where the U.S. president would not -- into the forefront with 164 nations to embrace the Kyoto Accord setting targets that will lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 2012. Big cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas have signed on to Seattle mayor Greg Nickels' Climate Protection Initiative pooling their best ideas to share with smaller cities.

o In one of the biggest environmental victories this year, the Bush Administration issued new rules in June requiring oil refineries to begin making ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD), a fuel with 97 percent less sulfur than ordinary diesel, which will cut smog-forming emissions by 10 percent. A spokesman for the Natural Resources Defense Council called the new EPA rule "the biggest step toward cutting vehicle pollution since lead was taken out of gasoline two decades ago."

2) Billionaire Warren Buffett Leads New Wave of Generosity w/ Largest Donation Ever

o Warren Buffett, the world's second richest man - worth billion - said in June he will begin to give away 85% of his wealth to foundations focused on world health -- eradicating diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis -- and on improving U.S. libraries and high schools. The value of his donation today is billion, the largest philanthropic gift in history.

o The percentage of Americans volunteering has reached a 30-year high says a new study. It is fueled in part by the boom in teens pitching in for their communities. "We may be on the cusp of a new civic generation," said the director of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which has tracked volunteer rates since 1974.

o In the same year it stopped receiving global food aid, China emerged as the world's third largest food donor, according to a report by the World Food Programme released in August. Another success story is India's transformation as a recipient of food aid in 2000 to becoming the 15th largest donor to WFP last year.

o The number of family foundations and nonprofits doubled in the past five years. For the wealthy, giving money or creating charities to make a difference in the world is becoming 'the cool thing to do'.

3) Environmentalists Heartened by Recovery of Many Endangered Species

o Called the Earth's richest seascape, scientists have discovered hugely diverse fish and coral populations thriving off Indonesia's Papua coastlines including more than 50 species of fish, coral and mantis shrimp previously unknown to science, like the "walking" shark that travels on its fins. It included 600 species of reef-building coral alone.

o Researchers studying coral reefs in the Arabian Gulf have found encouraging signs that corals are regenerating and the entire range may be re-established within a decade. At least 18 out of an original 36 species of coral found in the region have recovered from damage suffered due to past climatic events.

o A new study says the world's forests appear to be making a comeback, with countries like China and the US more thickly wooded than they were over 100 years ago. Larger trees have grown in number within 22 of the 50 most forested countries.

o Four Javan rhinos born in August in Indonesia constituted a surprising baby boom for a species that may be reduced to fewer than 60 individuals worldwide. These are the first known births for the Javan rhinos in three years.

o Black rhino numbers are up 20 percent in Kenya, after years of decline from poaching and habitat loss, a healthy increase that surpassed even conservationists targets.

o After nearly four decades on the endangered species list, bald eagles are soaring once again, their population climbing from a dismal count of just 417 nesting pairs in the continental United States in 1963 to more than 7,000 today. It was decided in February the eagles of the US no longer needed protection under the Endangered Species Act.

o To protect species in the future, the Bush Administration, in a historic move, encircled Hawaii with the world's largest marine preserve, home to 7000 marine species, at least a quarter of which are found nowhere else. The huge sanctuary is larger than all US National Parks combined, stretching the distance from Chicago to Florida.

4) Nepal Celebrates Renewed Peace as More Countries, Women Vote Worldwide

o Nepal was transformed in 2006 by a series of dramatic events that propelled the country to the brink of peace after ten years of insurgent fighting and 13,000 dead. In April, thousands took to the streets to protest the shutting down of parliament, defying the shoot-on-sight curfews. The Maoist insurgents eager to establish a republic, seized the moment, declared a unilateral ceasefire and joined a seven-party alliance that forced the king to relinquish power. Nepal's new cabinet dropped terrorist charges against the Maoists and called for redrawing, together, a new constitution. A peace agreement was later signed disarming the rebels in return for their joining the Democratic process.

o In other democratic developments, Kuwaitis voted in historic parliamentary elections which, for the first time, allowed women to cast ballots and stand as candidates. "It feels like a wedding day," said one Kuwaiti women on her way to the poll. Women made up 28 of the 252 candidates in the June election.

o The Democratic Republic of Congo voted in its first multi-party election in 40 years this October. "Many people walked miles to get to the polling stations, and some queued overnight, waiting for them to open."

o The United Arab Emirates, a Persian Gulf state that was created in 1971, took one baby step on the path to general election polling for all, holding its first election this month.

5) Bono Joins Kenya Providing Free AIDS Drugs, Saving Thousands

o Hollywood and corporate stars added their heft to efforts funneling money into AIDS programs. Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington donated million to a Los Angeles charity helping to find homes for the 17 million children made orphans by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

o Bono created the Product Red campaign to raise funds for the Global Fund to fight AIDS. He was joined by Oprah, Armani, Apple, The Gap and Motorola in rolling out the RED campaign that allows Americans to help fight AIDS in Africa by doing what they do best: shopping! Special edition products, like RED iPods will donate a portion of sales to the cause (Apple contributing from each RED nano sold).

o Kenya's president announced in June that anti-retroviral drugs will now be free to all people with AIDS within all of the nation's clinics and hospitals. Kenya is one of the few countries that have reduced their citizens' HIV rate -- from 14% in 1997 to 4% today.

o India also announced this year they will provide free anti-retroviral drugs for 100,000 Indians by early 2007 as part of a program which has already treated 35,000 people.

6) Natural Cures Effective Against Cancer, Parkinson's and ADHD

o Omega-3 Fish Oil has proven to be a better ADHD Treatment than stimulant drugs like Ritalin commonly prescribed for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to new research.

o A striking correlation was revealed this year between violence and nutrients in the diet. A clinical trial at the US government's National Institutes for Health and earlier studies involving people with violent records found that those given supplements have been able for the first time to control their anger and aggression.

o While suffering from a loss of speech and inability to walk, an Australian man was severely dissatisfied with western medical treatment and prognosis for Parkinson's Disease. He decided to pursue other methods and with the aid of homeopathy, alternative therapies, counseling, meditation and spiritual development, he was completely symptom-free within three and a half years. His book called, Stop Parkin' and Start Livin,' is a do-it-yourself menu for reversing the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

o A new treatment for skin cancer made from the sap of a common garden weed has proven effective on 71 percent of basal cell carcinomas in Australia. In phase II test results released in May, the PEP005 Topical gel cleared up the most common type of skin cancer in just two applications on two consecutive days. The plant, petty spurge has been used for years in Australia to treat cancerous spots on the skin.

o Topping off this year in health was the release of new analysis of breast cancer rates in American women that revealed a startling decline in the disease. Researchers believe that millions of older women refraining from taking hormone pills led to 14,000 fewer cases of tumors in 2003.

7) Boom in Internet Video Spreads Inspiration and Hugs to Millions o Utilizing YouTube and MySpace, citizens are uploading inspiring videos bringing tears to the eyes of millions whom they've never met -- and hugs.

o A video documenting the real life story of Juan Mann whose sole mission was giving free hugs to strangers on a crowded pedestrian street in Sydney became so popular on You Tube, that it has been viewed almost 8 million times since September. It sparked others to go out with hand-painted signs offering Free Hugs, and also landed him on Oprah.

o Another example of a video that spread virally though e-mail and blogs was an autistic kid shooting a miracle round of basketball for his high school team, the first time he was ever on the court.

o The You in YouTube was honored this year as Time's Person of the Year, not just for videos, but for all the citizen journalists who blogged and uploaded their point of view for all to see.

8) Wars On the Wane Worldwide as Reconciliation Unites Divisions

o The world has become dramatically more peaceful since 1992, according to the Human Security Report. The number of wars, coup d'etats, and acts of genocide has declined by 40 percent. Weapons sales between countries have dropped 33 percent during the same time, and the number of refugees has diminished by 45 percent.

o The best story of reconciliation and forgiveness in 2006 arose not between two rival countries or militias, but in a small Amish town where a gunman shot five girls to death in a schoolhouse. The community of Amish Christians, whose girls were lost, had forgiven the man by that evening. In fact, they were discussing ways they could help the family of the killer, a non-Amish man who lived nearby. "They were planning to send a contingent over, perhaps bringing some food..." Marie Roberts, the shooter's wife, sent a letter saying she was "overwhelmed by the forgiveness, grace and mercy" shown to her family.

o Two of the most dangerous street gangs in Boston embraced a quiet negotiated truce which has dramatically reduced bloodshed. The Boston Globe reported that "violence stopped abruptly in July, when a temporary cease-fire took effect and in the nearly four months since, there has not been a single shooting, while overall violent crime where the gang members live has plummeted by as much as 80 percent."

o The Basque separatist group in Spain, announced a permanent ceasefire after four decades of armed military resistance with the aim of "promoting a democratic process." Religious leaders in the country urged forgiveness. "The news prompted jubilation across the country, where ordinary citizens said they can hardly believe the end has come for a group blamed for more than 850 deaths," reported The Scotsman in March.

o In Africa and Asia peace was breaking out far and wide. Cease fire agreements were signed between rebel groups and governments in Sudan, Burundi, Mali, and between feuding countries Nigeria and Cameroon with the help of the United Nations. In India and Uganda, unilateral cease fires were announced and peaceful talks sought by resistance groups responsible for tens of thousands of deaths.

o And if that weren't enough peace for you, an ancient Silk Road reopened high in the Himalayas this summer marking the beginning of a new era in trade and diplomatic relations between massive neighbors China and India after more than 40 years of war, mistrust and suspicion.

9) Corporations Lead Green Movement in Autos, Recycling and Sustainability

Automobiles

o "Electric vehicles, gasoline-electric hybrids, diesels, flex-fuel and hydrogen-powered cars are inching up the consumer on-ramp at a faster pace, judging from world debuts of 21 alternative-fuel vehicles," reported the Christian Science Monitor from December's international Los Angeles Auto Show.

o Richard Branson and his Virgin Group went green in September, launching an investment fund for developing environmentally friendly fuels investing up to 0m (EUR315.6m) in renewable energy initiatives with the new Virgin Fuels over three years.

o Leaders of the big three US automakers pledged in a letter to the US Congress in June to double production of flexible-fuel vehicles by 2010 adding incentive to fuel providers to produce ethanol and other biofuels and install pumps. They've produced 5 million flexible-fuel vehicles so far, which can run on gasoline or fuel blends of up to 85 percent ethanol and project an additional 1 million vehicles this year and 2 million annually by 2010.

o GM unveiled a new green auto plant in Michigan touted as the "most environmentally friendly auto plant in the world" using innovative energy and water saving techniques.

o Toyota North America president, Jim Press, announced his company's plans to develop a hybrid vehicle that will run on batteries charged by a common electrical outlet. For long drives it will be able to use gasoline, or even alternative fuels like ethanol or bio-diesel (made from vegetable scraps or discarded cooking oils). He holds a vision for the future in which we drive cars that actually "clean the air" going coast to coast on a single tank of fuel.

o Tesla Motors' goal is to design a sports car that would go as fast as a Ferrari or Porsche -- but run on electricity. Their first model is "a sleek two-seater called the Roadster" looking something like "a Lotus Elise." ... Their main competition might be the Tango, another sporty two-seater. At 195 miles per gallon, zero to 60 in four seconds... the electric supercar is here. Made by Commuter Cars, Inc. George Clooney himself was one of the first buyers.

Recycling

o Dell computers, hailed as one of the most environmentally conscious computer makers, launched a free recycling program in the U.S. They are the first to offer free computer recycling -- to anyone owning a Dell, whether or not you are purchasing a new one. Owners can even schedule a home pick-up of their Dell device at no charge.

o More environmentally friendly computer equipment is available thanks to manufacturers like Dell, HP, and others that now have products containing reduced levels of cadmium, lead, and mercury to better protect human health. They are easier to recycle and meet the government's Energy Star guidelines for efficiency.

o The Australian Food and Grocery Council revealed that about 90% of waste and by-products from the food and grocery manufacturers surveyed in 2006 was being reused or recycled, with less than 10% going to landfill. Industry participants in the survey have also reduced energy use by 14%, water use by 21% and greenhouse emissions by 29% since 2003.

o Companies who once fought against environmentalists in court are finding today that recycling makes good economic sense. Customers appreciate that Starbucks uses recycled cardboard and wish it would use more, but the new twist is that sustainable paper saves the corporation money.

Sustainability

o Enterprise Rent-A-Car will commemorate its 50th anniversary by pledging the unprecedented gift of 50 million trees to The National Arbor Day Foundation. Enterprise has formed a partnership with the Foundation to plant 50 million trees over the next 50 years - a gift of more than million.

o Big companies like DuPont are putting serious money into developing "bio fuel" -- motor fuel that is processed from the waste of corn stalks. DuPont wants to replace many of their current factories that use oil, with biorefineries like the one they opened this year, in Loudon, Tenn., that uses corn to manufacter many products like its Sorona carpet fiber, cosmetics, soaps and detergents. The factory consumes 40 percent less energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent versus its petroleum-based ancestors.

o With the new reality of crude oil in the US, the plastics industries are turning to corn and fast-growing switchgrass to manufacture everything from carpet to car parts. Bio-degradable and reusable shopping bags made of corn, called BioBags, will break down in a landfill -- or home composter -- within four to 12 weeks.

o Belu Natural Mineral Water introduced the UK's first biodegradable and compostable plastic bottle. The revolutionary bottle is made from corn instead of oil and can be commercially composted back into soil in 80 days. "This can dramatically reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfills and gives everyone an easy way to help protect the environment," said the company's founder.

o To top off this year's active pursuit of the "green" dollar by corporations, further green investment is on the horizon from venture capital firms. They are poised to invest hundreds of millions into the emerging "green technologies" believing them to be as lucrative as anything that preceded them in Silicon Valley. That means we'll soon see more solutions to environmental problems that could shrink landfills, clean up the air and water, and help ween us from our addiction to oil.

10) Pelosi Seeks to Heal Rifts as First Female US House Speaker

Nancy Pelosi, 66, will become the first female House leader and the highest-ranking woman in U.S. political history -- second in line behind the president. Voters weary of corruption cheered her election night victory speech when Ms. Pelosi stated intentions to lead the most honest and open House in history. She stressed her plans to proceed in a bipartisan fashion to find solutions to the Iraq crisis. Civility is something this grandmother wants to return to the halls of Congress

In November elections nationwide, Americans seemed not to be as hypnotized by fear -- and the suggestion that a vote for Democrats would be a "win for the terrorists". It seemed like some of the poison had been drawn out of the body politic. The system of checks and balances -- the genius of the US Constitution -- won big, with civility and competence the winning platform. By voting against the arrogance of power, common sense Americans affirmed solution-oriented good governance. The vital center of American politics has realigned and it is a recipe for moderation.

Here's wishing for a better year in 2007!

Growing Organic Plants

!±8± Growing Organic Plants

What is organic gardening? It's growing your plants and vegetables the old-fashioned way, without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and it's growing in popularity because it's a much safer food alternative for your family, but growing your own organic produce is cost-effect in these days of high food prices.

Growing organic plants is much more than just using natural fertilizers and pesticides. For a garden to be truly organic, you have to consider all the elements of that garden.
- Soil. Soil is the basis for all gardening, but organic gardening uses natural methods to replenish and nourish the soil so it nourishes your plants in return.
- Water. Water is an important element of the environment, and organic gardening strives to conserve water by using mulches and other organic compounds to help retain moisture and reduce the need for heavy watering.
- Plants. Choosing the right plants is a key to growing organically. Choosing plants native to your growing region, hardy plants that can survive hot and cold temperatures, and drought- and pest-resistant plants can make a big difference in the success of your organic garden.
- Insects. While there are a variety of pests that can destroy your garden, many beneficial insects, like praying mantis and ladybugs are actually helpful to your garden, and can help control pests, as well. Controlling other pests with natural products, like organic pest sprays or even homemade sprays can save your garden from harsh chemicals and hungry pests, too.
- Weeds. You don't need harsh chemicals to control weeds, either. There are many natural alternatives, like homemade weed killers like vinegar or even boiling water that are much better for the environment than chemical weed killers.

How do you get started with your first organic garden? For starters, create a compost pile so you'll have healthy, rich compost to add to your soil when it comes time to plant your garden. That acts as a natural fertilizer and replenishes spent, low-nutrient soil, as well. How do you start a compost pile?
- Find an area at least 3-feet by 3-feet to create your pile.
- Spread a layer of hardy "brown" material, like straw, cornstalks, or autumn leaves several inches deep on the area.
- Add a thick layer of good "green" material, like grass clippings, kitchen waste (NO animal fats or proteins, just vegetables and grain-based products).
- Add a few shovels of good garden soil in a thin layer.
- Moisten.
- Keep adding green and brown material until you have a pile about three feet high.
- Keep moist, but don't drown.
- Turn regularly to mix the compost as it begins to break down.
- Shovel the compost into your garden's soil, and make sure you blend it well into the soil. Use the material that's not broken down yet to start your next pile.

Organic gardening is an enjoyable hobby, it can help put fresher, healthy food on your table, and it can help your garden's environment, as well. It isn't hard to get started, and once you plant some organic plants and vegetables, the entire family may want to help with the new enterprise!

Help Your Plants Breathe - Use a Garden Cultivator

!±8± Help Your Plants Breathe - Use a Garden Cultivator

Have you noticed as you plant a small flower bed or a five acre field, it is always the weeds that always grow faster than whatever seeds you have you have planted. To keep the weed battle from being victorious, you absolutely must keep turning the soil over. Doing this will serve a two fold purpose: 1. keep killing the weeds and 2. aerate the ground. Garden cultivators help in this process.

There are probably many readers who have spent time on their hands and knees pulling weeds by hands. Some people can even remember using a garden cultivator that was powered by human strength, pushing downward and forward. If one visits Amish country, garden cultivation is being done by horses pulling the cultivator. Farms throughout the country have cultivators that affix to their tractors to go through their fields and large gardens to eliminate the problem of weeds. But what about the weekend gardener who has no need for large equipment and does not want to break their backs. What then for them.

If a person just has a flower garden or a very small vegetable garden, all a person would need is something like a Garden Weasel. These are usually seen advertised on television. They are three rotating prongs on a long handle. The middle prong can be removed so you can get close to the plants, and the long handle can be removed for use in flower boxes. Ace Hardware lists these items for sale at around .

To make life a little easier in your larger garden, you are ready to consider either Electric or Gas Powered Tillers. Troy Bilt is a rather popular brand that has a good track record as well. They have an electric tiller that starts at a price of around 9. These start very easily by just turning on a button. A gas powered tiller/cultivator. They must be started by a pull rope, but usually one gentle pull will do the trick. Finally, the most highly recommended garden cultivator would be the Mantil Tiller/Cultivator. It has a 16" tilling width, and it weighs only thirty pounds. The best part is that it comes with a one year money back guarantee, so you can use it for a whole year, and if you do not like it, you can return it. It sells for 9.
